And Special #1 ends. It is about as relevant to the overall plot of its series as the first Yu-Gi-Oh! DF special was, but I had a lot of fun writing it regardless. There really isn't much to say about this chapter. It is the action climax and the resolution. Pretty standard stuff. We do get some cool character stuff for Fredrik and Glary, though, at least, and since I do hope to revisit these characters at some point, any amount of development helps.
Chapter Four
End
“We don’t have a choice,” said Fredrik. “If we try to run it’ll just make it easier for him to pick us off.”
“I agree,” said Glary. “Win or lose, live or die, it’s time that this ended.”
Fang and ProjectDroidmon nodded.
Fredrik looked around, and he noticed that they were close to the forest. He leaned in close to Glary and whispered something to him. Then he said, “Go!” He and Fang charged toward DarklordVilemon, maneuvering themselves so that they were between their foe and the forest edge. Glary and ProjectDroidmon, keeping low, ran into the forest and out of sight. Fredrik and Fang jumped up, prepared to strike. DarklordVilemon screamed, hitting the duo hard. It hurt just as much Fredrik thought that it would. The sonic blast hit the forest over a wide expanse, kicking up a large amount of dust. Then it threw Fredrik and Fang sprawling into the dust cloud where they were caught by Glary and ProjectDroidmon. They were safe. Because DarklordVilemon had been focusing on Fredrik and Fang, he hadn’t seen where Glary and ProjectDroidmon had gone, and because of the dust, he hadn’t seen where Fredrik and Fang had ended up either. The four found a dense part of the woods to use as cover, taking the time to regroup.
Fredrik sighed, “We have some time, but not much. We need some kind of plan.”
“If only my powers were more effective against him,” said ProjectDroidmon, “I’d be more help. Plus his staff vibrates, letting it practically pass right through my armor.”
Fredrik looked up and down his mechanical ally and said, “You know, I might just have an idea.”
Meanwhile DarklordVilemon flew slowly over the forest, looking around intensely. “Come out, come out wherever you are!” he cried. He raised his sword and swung it, leveling an entire section of the forest. Then he struck again, and more trees fell. He struck again, and again. He raised his sword yet again, preparing to attack, when out of the corner of his eye he saw a red streak. He brandished his staff, deflecting the attack, and turned, expecting to see Fang. Instead he saw ProjectDroidmon, but a different ProjectDroidmon. His armor had diminished, making him lighter, and more free-moving joints had formed in his arms and legs. His torso had become more streamlined, and his remaining hand had reconfigured into WereGarurumon-esque claws. This was ProjectDroidmon after scanning Fang. This was ProjectDroidmon Rush Mode.
DarklordVilemon raised his sword, but then he saw another red flash, coming from the other direction, within the trees. He was tired of playing games. He swung his sword, unleashing his ultimate attack toward the source of the red flash. The attack leveled more of the forest. DarklordVilemon looked around. The next attack could come at any moment. But as he looked he realized that his enemies were nowhere to be found. They had retreated into the trees once again.
Fredrik, Fang, and Glary ran side by side. They were soon joined by ProjectDroidmon and stopped. They turned and ran at their foe. When they were close, Glary and Fang grabbed Fredrik by the arms. They threw him up at the foe, and he swung his sword. The startled DarklordVilemon raised his sword to block, and suddenly Fang and ProjectDroidmon were to either side of him. They slashed with their claws, pushing the foe back. That’s when Glary and Jumped up, his glowing left fist raised, and punched DarklordVilemon in the face. There was a burst of light, and DarklordVilemon was thrown through the air. He hit the ground, unmoving. The four landed near each other, waiting to see if their foe would rise.
He did.
And he wasn’t hurt. Instead he seemed excited. He laughed and looked up at the sky. “Finally I may have found an enemy worthy of my time. But my goals are too big for me to waste time with you. You four are obstacles in my way. You have to die.”
DarklordVilemon turned to the four and raised his staff, slamming it into the ground. Tectonic waves tore the ground apart. Fredrik, Fang, Glary and ProjectDroidmon were forced to jump up into the air and scatter. DarklordVilemon rose into the air, just above the ground, and shot straight at Glary. ProjectDroidmon saw the enemy’s advance and activated his rockets, moving to intercept. He raised his claws and thrust, but DarklordVilemon ducked and stabbed with his sword. ProjectDroidmon slid to the side and kicked. DarklordVilemon blocked with his staff, spun, and swung his sword, slashing ProjectDroidmon across the chest.
As his partner hung unmoving in the air, Glary ran across the broken ground, trying desperately to reach him in time. But he was too late. DarklordVilemon swung his sword, calling, “Soultaker Wave!” He released his attack, which overcame the machine Digimon, ripping him apart. His various parts lay scattered across the broken earth. Glary fell to his knees as the parts became data and faded away.
Glary seemed too stunned to move. Then he rose to his feet, turned to DarklordVilemon, and said, “Even if it costs me my life, I will destroy you.”
Fredrik and Fang faced DarklordVilemon as well from their place a good distance away and said, “The same goes for us. Your evil has been allowed to exist for too long already.”
“Then come at me,” said DarklordVilemon, “and we’ll finish this.”
The three warriors ran straight at their foe. He screamed, but they dodged the resulting sonic attack. Glary summoned the light into his hand, even brighter than before, and punched. DarklordVilemon raised his staff, blocking the attack, but the punch broke through the staff and carried through. DarklordVilemon was pushed back, but he recovered quickly and unleashed his sonic attack again, slamming Glary into the ground hard enough that the ground collapsed in on him. He didn’t re-emerge.
Using the distraction presented by Glary’s advance Fredrik and Fang got in close to their opponent. They lunged, but DarklordVilemon was fast. He brandished his sword, deflecting Fredrik’s and Fang’s attacks. The duo hung in the air. DarklordVilemon called his attack and swung his sword, unleashing his Soultaker Wave straight at Fredrik. Fang reached over and pulled his friend out of the way, throwing him to the ground. But the same motion threw Fang into the path of the attack himself. The attack hit and Fang cried out in pain.
“Fang!” Fredrik cried.
“Here!” said a voice. Fredrik looked toward its source. Glary had emerged. His hat had fallen away, as had most of his bandage. He was breathing hard. In his left hand he held a jumble of code. You couldn’t tell by looking, but it was the part of his fractal code that he used to help his partner Digivolve. He threw the code to Fredrik, who caught it in his right hand. As soon as he touched the code it became a small blue device. The device began to vibrate and changed color, becoming a darker blue and growing transparent. Fredrik aimed the screen at Fang, who was encased in blue light. The light dispersed DarklordVilemon’s attack.
“WereGarurumon, Ultimate Digivolve to!” He became a metal wolf made of green, blue and yellow metal plating with guns on his shoulders and tail and a massive cannon on his back, “Z’dGarurumon!”
This new Digimon aimed his weapons at DarklordVilemon and called, “Full-Metal Blaze!” His legs and chest opened up, revealing various weapons. All of his weapons fired at once, and DarklordVilemon was overtaken, his armor stripped away in chunks. “No!” he cried as his body began to strain. “I am DarklordVilemon. I am invincible!”
“Wrong,” said Fredrik, jumping up and raising his sword. “No one is invincible,” he said. He swung his sword, calling, “Amano Kenbu!”
His sword passed straight through DarklordVilemon, cutting him in half. He became data and disappeared. Fang suddenly shrunk, becoming a furry orange ball with a large horn on its forehead. The orange ball fell, and Fredrik caught it.
“Fang, is that you?”
“Yeah,” said the orange ball. “I’m actually the Baby 2 Level Digimon Tsunomon now, but you can still call me Fang if you want to.”
Fredrik nodded and looked around. The earth around him was shattered. A testament to the battle that had unfolded. Fredrik heard footsteps behind him. “Glary,” he said, “I’m sorry about your friend.”
Glary simply replied, “Death is not always absolute when it comes to Digimon.”
“What will you do?” Fredrik asked.
“I’m going back to Digi Garden. I’m confident that Droidmon will be reborn, and whatever form he takes, I want to be there waiting for him.”
So Fredrik and Glary parted ways. Thanks to the Digivice that Fredrik now possessed, Fang became WereGarurumon again in record time. Even though he never became Z’dGarurumon again, he and Fredrik were still plenty strong enough to face whatever they encountered in the future, and the two lived long and full lives.
Meanwhile, in Digi Garden, a man in a suite and bowler’s cap with a bandaged arm sat against a tree with a Digitama in his lap. Just as he dozed off, the egg hatched.
